The etymology of the proper noun “Olympic” follows logically back to the original games between the city-states of ancient Greece which were held in honor of the gods who dwell atop Mt. Olympus. For the ancient Greeks, the Olympic Games symbolized opportunity to win favor in the hope of advancement. The immortal gods, with egos bigger than Johnny Weir’s, were the vehicles through which one could achieve happiness and prosperity. Their appeasement through athletic prowess at the games was thought to bring good fortune, not only to the individual, but to their nation as well. Men also oiled up and wrestled naked. These were the realities of the ancient Greek games.
